About Working with Boys

The story behind the programme

Working with Boys began as a book and is now an online and in-person training programme, that has been adopted by schools in the UK and internationally.

Why It Works

Three principles, one programme

Impactful

Many schools have used the programme to great and lasting effect, with a positive focus on how boys relate to one another.

Sustainable

A train-the-teacher model: your own staff deliver and control the programme, so it never relies on outside providers visiting.

Affordable

Choose your price point: £22 for the book, £250 to train one person online, £1,500 to train all staff online or by INSET.

The Programme

Thirteen weeks of lessons, built on the book

The Working with Boys programme was first published as a book by Routledge in March 2023 and has since been developed into a full online and in-person training course. It has been adopted by schools nationally and internationally, helping staff support boys to thrive and build healthier, more respectful peer cultures.

At its heart is a relentless, positive focus on how boys relate to one another. Through structured lessons and guided reflection, boys create relational cultures grounded in mutual respect, reducing misogynistic attitudes and harmful behaviours while being supported to be the best version of themselves.

The thirteen-week programme explores themes such as banter, hierarchies, fear of humiliation, motivation, anger, competition and football.

Fits Your School

  • Most effective in the autumn term of the year boys turn 12
  • Adaptable from around age 7 to 18, primary to sixth form
  • Recommended for boys and girls together, or in all-boys schools

It pairs well with Girls on Board, created by the same author.

The Creator

Created by a headteacher who tested it first

Before writing the book, Andrew Hampton deployed the programme for three years in the school he led, with stunning results.

On embarking on his post-headship career, he "road tested" all the ideas and concepts of the programme before consolidating everything into the book. The training courses on this site are all based on the book, but also go further.

What Schools Say

Results schools trust

Working with Boys is much needed and the timing is perfect. There is too much toxic masculinity in society and this course will make people rethink.
